Following Up When Your Prospect Has Stopped Responding to You

If you have been working toward a buying decision with a prospect only to have the lead turn cold, don’t assume you have lost the opportunity to make the sale. There could be many reasons why you have not heard something from your prospect.

Now is not the time to pressure your contact about making a decision, so you will want to make your next contact very low key. Assume that your prospect is not ready to buy from you today, but do reach out the potential customer to let them know how much you appreciate the time they have spent with you to date and that you are ready to call or meet with them when they are ready to discuss their needs. This approach puts your product or service squarely back on their radar without any added pressure.

Your contact person may respond to your message to give you an idea of when their company will be ready to take the next step and you can make plans accordingly. The account may have been passed to a new person, and you will be given that person’s contact information so that you can follow up accordingly. In either case, it’s a positive situation for you, and it brings you closer to closing the sale.

Old, Dead Leads

The other type of dead leads that you can breathe life into are ones that never really got off the ground. You have a person’s name and possibly some other information on a business card. Do some basic research to qualify the lead before adding the person to your call sheet and then contact these prospects as part of your cold call or e-mail routine.

Don’t assume you can’t revive a dead lead simply because you haven’t heard from a prospect for some time or that it’s too late to have an initial conversation. Persistence is the key to successfully closing sales.

Prospecting doesn’t have to be a dirty word when it comes to sales. Keeping your dignity is an essential part of success in this field, and respect for yourself and others is something that never goes out of style. Top sales representatives know that prospects are looking for help solving problems they have, not in being sold to, and this mindset is what separates a person who is interested in developing a long-term relationship with a customer from someone who only wants to make his or her quota for the month.

When you are looking for potential customers for your product or service, get a clear picture of your ideal customer. What kind of person or company wants what you are selling? Where are they located? How can you reach out to them? The answers to these questions will help you develop a plan to find the kinds of prospects who are interested in what you are selling and are motivated to buy from you.

With this type of approach, you will be able to spend more time on sales calls that will eventually end up closing. You can also focus on developing a long-term relationship with your prospect, which is a true sign that you are respecting his or her dignity. This attitude will be noted and the prospect will be more likely to give you the order when he or she is ready to buy. No one likes to feel pressured to make a buying decision, and the fact that you weren’t pushy in your prospecting efforts will only work in your favor.

The flip side of prospecting with dignity is that you should make a point of respecting your own when looking for potential customers. Making contact with potential customers can be nerve-wracking, even for experienced sales representatives, and anyone can have a bad day or even a rough patch. It’s important to remember that one prospect’s “No” doesn’t mean the next person you contact will respond in the same way.

If, however, you are in a situation where you are being instructed to convey information that is dishonest to drum up business and you are not feeling good about yourself as a result, you may need to move on. Your personal dignity matters, and prospecting can be conducted in a way that is positive for you and potential buyers alike.
